Pitch Black Pokemon Cards With the Best Binder Appeal

The market has a top 10. Your binder deserves a second opinion.

Pitch Black Pokemon Cards With the Best Binder Appeal BinderDex editorial cover
A BinderDex evergreen editorial cover built from source-safe card imagery.

The Pitch Black cards with the strongest binder appeal are Mega Darkrai ex 116/084, Morpeko ex 117/084, Slowbro 090/084, Goldeen 087/084, Mega Chandelure ex 115/084, and Mega Zeraora ex 114/084.

That is not the same order as the market board. Binder appeal is the ability of a card to give a page a clear visual identity from normal viewing distance. Price can tell me which pocket is expensive. It cannot make six expensive pockets look good together.

The binder six
watch first
  1. Mega Darkrai ex 116/084: the visual thesis for the entire set
  2. Morpeko ex 117/084: the loudest personality and strongest pink-black contrast
  3. Slowbro 090/084: an awkward urban scene that gets better the longer you look
  4. Goldeen 087/084: bright water and open space in a set built around darkness
  5. Mega Chandelure ex 115/084: smoke, violet light, and a natural Darkrai pairing
  6. Mega Zeraora ex 114/084: the best motion card and electric-blue counterweight

How I ranked the Pitch Black cards

The Pokémon Company released Mega Evolution: Pitch Black on July 17, 2026 and describes it as an expansion with more than 115 cards. The current BinderDex Pitch Black set page has 120 exact card records, including the six Mega Evolution Pokémon ex and the Illustration Rare shelf.

That gives us plenty of cards to sort and a very easy trap: turning the raw/NM price column into a taste column.

I used five checks instead:

  • Can I recognize the silhouette from a few feet away?
  • Does the palette create a lane that other cards can support?
  • Is there a scene or personality left after the price label disappears?
  • Can the card anchor or balance a 3x3 page?
  • Does it express Pitch Black specifically, rather than generic rarity?

The July 30 prices below come from BinderDex raw/NM rows. They are context, not the ranking formula. This set is two weeks old, and nominal 30-day windows still contain presale behavior.

1. Mega Darkrai ex 116/084

Mega Darkrai ex 116/084 is the obvious winner, which is inconvenient only if you wanted this list to perform a twist for attention.

The card is nearly monochrome. Darkrai sits in the middle of a dense branching pattern that looks part root system, part smoke, and part cracked night sky. Small green accents keep the image from becoming a grayscale exercise. More important, the central silhouette survives at thumbnail size.

That is what an anchor card does. It gives the cards around it a job.

The July 30 BinderDex row is $283.10, the highest raw/NM value in the set. In this case the price leader and taste leader agree, but the visual case comes first. Cover the price and the card still tells you what Pitch Black is about.

Build outward with black, violet, gray, and a small amount of acid green. The page does not need six versions of darkness. It needs Darkrai to make the quieter cards feel intentional.

2. Morpeko ex 117/084

Morpeko ex is the best card in the set for collectors who think "dark" should still be fun.

Hot pink marks slash through a black and gray field while Morpeko lunges forward with its mouth open. The pose is ridiculous, aggressive, and readable. This is not subtle character work. It is a tiny emergency siren with an appetite.

The July 30 BinderDex row is $129.80, third on the current set price board. I prefer it to the gold Darkrai because Morpeko gives a page more to work with. Pink can connect to Trainer cards, electric accents, darker Pokémon, or one deliberately loud center pocket.

Morpeko also solves a common binder problem. A page full of expensive dark cards can look serious in the way a waiting room looks serious. One loud creature with a clear expression makes the collection feel owned by a person again.

3. Slowbro 090/084

Slowbro is where the market ranking and binder ranking properly separate.

The card places a bright pink Slowbro under a large industrial lamp, surrounded by pipes, metal, and a narrow urban passage. Slowbro looks entirely comfortable in a scene that should probably come with a hard-hat requirement. The color contrast is immediate, but the awkward calm is what gives the card staying power.

BinderDex has Slowbro at $18.17 on the July 30 raw/NM row, ninth on the current price board. I have it third because it adds a scene rather than another effect.

July 30 BinderDex raw/NM row: $18.17. A lower-priced Illustration Rare with a complete urban scene and an unmistakable pink focal point.

Put Slowbro beneath Darkrai and the page gains scale. Darkrai becomes the nightmare above the city; Slowbro becomes the resident who missed the memo. That relationship is more useful than matching two rarity labels.

4. Goldeen 087/084

Goldeen earns fourth place by giving Pitch Black some air.

The Illustration Rare is dominated by clear cyan water, white movement, and coral-orange fish. A school of Goldeen creates depth without making the frame feel busy. From binder distance, it reads as one bright blue window.

That matters because a dark page can collapse into one visual block. Goldeen creates a pause between black, violet, and electric cards. The eye gets somewhere to rest before the next Mega Pokémon starts doing weather.

The July 30 BinderDex row is $13.31, tenth on the current set board and the least expensive card in my six.

Cheap relative to the SIR shelf is not the same as filler. A binder page cannot live on smoke and teeth alone.

5. Mega Chandelure ex 115/084

Mega Chandelure ex is the cleanest Darkrai partner.

The card uses smoky black and violet around a cropped chandelier form. It feels less like a character portrait and more like a shape emerging from a room after the lights have already gone wrong. The atmosphere is excellent. The silhouette is slightly less immediate than Darkrai or Morpeko, which is why it lands fifth.

BinderDex has it at $52.40 on the July 30 raw/NM row.

July 30 BinderDex raw/NM row: $52.40. The strongest atmospheric partner for Mega Darkrai's black-and-white anchor.

I would place Chandelure diagonally from Darkrai rather than beside it. The repeated dark mass needs space, and the violet glow works better when another card separates the two anchors.

6. Mega Zeraora ex 114/084

Mega Zeraora ex has the strongest motion in Pitch Black.

Electric blue and white streak across the frame while black and yellow keep the Pokémon readable. The forward lunge is clear at small size, and the palette is the easiest way to stop a night page from becoming a row of near-identical shadows.

The July 30 BinderDex row is $70.59, fourth on the current set board. It ranks sixth for me because the effect is stronger than the scene. Zeraora looks fast immediately. Slowbro and Goldeen give me more to discover.

That is still an important page role. Put Zeraora opposite Morpeko and the two cards create a neon lane without borrowing Darkrai's visual language.

The expensive card I left out

Mega Darkrai ex 120/084 is second on the current BinderDex price board at $196.51. Its gold line art is crisp, scarce, and easy to identify. It is also flatter on a mixed binder page than the Special Illustration Rare.

July 30 BinderDex raw/NM row: $196.51. A price-board giant that does not automatically make my taste-first top six.

That does not make the gold card bad. It makes it a different collector object. A gold-rarity page, Mega Hyper Rare run, or Darkrai species page can give it the context it wants. Inside a six-card Pitch Black taste ranking, the card asks its price to do too much of the talking.

Gwynn 119/084 is my honorable mention. The warm orange light and centered character portrait create a strong Trainer lane, especially for a page that also uses Misty's Vitality or Gladion's Final Battle.

Three Pitch Black binder pages I would build

Page routes
  1. Night page: Mega Darkrai 116, Mega Chandelure 115, and darker standard-set cards. Use one lighter card so the black shapes stay separate.
  2. Neon page: Morpeko 117 and Mega Zeraora 114 as opposing anchors. Fill with pink, yellow, blue, and black accents rather than matching rarity.
  3. Quiet oddities page: Slowbro 090 and Goldeen 087 with softer Illustration Rares. Let scenes and color fields carry the page.

The full set belongs on the Pitch Black card list and checklist. This ranking has a narrower job: deciding which exact cards deserve to become page anchors instead of remaining rows in a sorted result.

FAQ

What is the best Pitch Black Pokemon card for a binder?

Mega Darkrai ex 116/084 is my best overall binder card because its black-and-white branching art defines the set and remains readable from normal binder distance.

What is a cheaper Pitch Black card with strong binder appeal?

Slowbro 090/084 and Goldeen 087/084 are the best lower-priced choices in this ranking. Slowbro adds a complete urban scene, while Goldeen adds bright cyan contrast to a darker page.

How many cards are in the Pitch Black set?

The Pokémon Company describes Pitch Black as having more than 115 cards. BinderDex currently tracks 120 exact cards in the English set checklist.

Is the most expensive Pitch Black card automatically the best binder card?

No. Mega Darkrai ex 116/084 leads both lists for me, but the rest diverge. Slowbro and Goldeen rank above several more expensive cards because they add scene, contrast, and page structure.

What to watch next

What to watch next
  • Fresh-set pricing: Pitch Black released July 17. Risk: early raw/NM values can move quickly as supply grows.
  • Presale contamination: Nominal 30-day changes include time before release. Risk: a dramatic percentage gets mistaken for a mature market trend.
  • Price-order bias: The set board is useful market context. Risk: six expensive cards become six unrelated visual statements.
  • Image and variant checks: Confirm collector number, rarity, language, and finish before adding a card to a binder plan.
